Daily
they went to visit the families and were searching for a house.
It was not very easy. One day Mother Theresa took us to a
wealthy man and with his help we got a shared flat. From the
meager income we got from our diffusion work we began to buy
a few necessary things for the new house, linens, mattresses,
be sheets, clothes, suitcases a nd a sewing machine. A little
later Sr. Nazarena with Doris (a postulent then) joined us.
On 31 December 1956 we moved to Calcutta to our new residence.
The Daughters of the Cross were very kind enough to send us
by their school bus, laden with fruits and vegetables. We
stayed in our flat for 8 years. Fr. Tempra SSP from Bombay
helped to put up the Book Centre. He also got a lot of free
books from England. It was a great providence of God.
The sisters of Charity lent us an altar. The Loretto Sisters
lent us the pews for the chapel. Mr. Pereira gave us beautiful
curtains to divide the refectory so that we could have some
space for the chapel. Soon we were having daily Mass in our
Chapel. Then slowly our community began to grow in number.
Srs. Raffaella and Regina Palliparampil joined us. They continued
visiting the families.
The Bishop and Msgr. Barber were good to us with the help
of Msgr. Barber we found the present house at 35 Royd Street.
There were some tenants and we began to pray that they might
clear the house soon.
At this time we got the news of the death of our blessed Maestra
Thecla on 5 February 1964. Then we began a novena to her.
To our surprise, before the end of the Novena all the tenants
moved out of the building. And we gladly occupied the house
at 35 Royd Street. That was a memorable year 1964.
On 8 September 1974 the new Book and Media Centre and Reading Room was
blessed and inaugurated in Calcutta by Archbishop Piccachy.
Meanwhile the Juniorate also had been started in Calcutta.
The first group consisted of 8 sisters with Sr. Thecla as
their Directress as well as the community Superior. After
a year the Juniorate was shifted to Bombay.
The community took part in the Calcutta Book Fair for the
first time in 1985. The Alberione Lending Library was inaugurated
in 1988. In 2002 the Book Centre was renovated and it caters
to the people of Bengal and surrounding areas. The sisters
also reach out from Calcutta to all the surrounding places
through the visit to the schools, families, taking part in
Book Fairs, organising Bible Weeks and conducting animation
programmes in the schools and parishes
